DIY Nut Butter

Let me tell you, store bought nut butters can make a dent in the wallet. But nut butters like almond butter don’t have to be expensive if you’re willing to put in a little bit of time and effort!

To make homemade nut butter, first, buy a big bag of nuts. They sell them at Costco or you can get them in the bulk section at a grocery stores like Fresh Thyme, Cub Foods and The Wedge Community Co-op.

If you have the means to purchase organic nuts, DO IT. Conventionally grown nuts like almonds CAN be sprayed with a chemicals for pasteurization. One of these chemicals is known as propylene oxide (PPO). PPO is used in foams in furniture, clothes and car seats. The American Cancer Society classifies it under the category “Known and Probable Human Carcinogens” here. If the conventional nuts are not sprayed with PPO, then they can be sprayed with glyphosate. In July 2017, glyphosate was listed as known to the state of California to cause cancer. If you want to read more about how much glyphosate is used in our food system check out this link. I was shook. But don’t let this stop you from buying nuts like almonds. If you can’t buy organic that’s is ok. Buy them anyway because almonds are great for your heart and brain.
